All-New Design of the D8000

The name DC is derived from the musical term "Da Capo," meaning "return to the beginning of the score." Seven years have passed since its release, and the previous model "D8000," which has become a long-seller with over 2000 units shipped domestically and internationally, has been completely redesigned, and a new flagship headphone has been developed. The driver unit's diaphragm has been reviewed from the manufacturing technology, and the proprietary technology "AFDS: Air Film Damping System*" has been redesigned in terms of diaphragm diameter, pitch, and pattern. Furthermore, by removing the magnet in front of the driver, the open area is approximately 70% larger than the previous model. Additionally, the earpads have been changed to 1.5 times the thickness of previous ones, increasing the volume of the sound space. In addition to the traditional sound with a sense of openness and volume in the low range and delicate high range, each sound has become more precise, achieving a vast sound stage.

Due to the above design changes, the body has been lightened by approximately 100g, and by adopting a special Japanese paper material, the fit is comfortable and emphasizes comfort without a closed feeling.

Equipped with the Advanced "AFDS: Air Film Damping System"

Traditional planar magnetic type drivers had the issue of the diaphragm contacting the structure at low frequencies where the diaphragm's amplitude becomes large, requiring the driver unit to raise the reproducible low-frequency range. In the old model D8000, this problem was overcome by the unique technology "AFDS," which controls the diaphragm's movement using air viscosity, allowing the low-frequency reproducible range to be lowered. This solved the issue of poor low-frequency reproduction, a weakness of planar magnetic types. This is a technology that can be called the reinvention of planar magnetic types.

Furthermore, in the D8000 DC, this "AFDS" has been further advanced, and the diaphragm diameter, pitch, and pattern of the punching metal used have been redesigned. Additionally, different pattern punching metals have been adopted at the front and back of the diaphragm. As a result, combined with breathable earpads, a low-frequency sound with a sense of volume and openness is achieved. The ultra-lightweight film diaphragm is formed by etching an extremely thin aluminum coil. This eliminates the need for a dynamic type-specific structure where the coil lead wire is attached to the diaphragm, reducing the vibration system weight to approximately 1/3. Pursuing theoretical correctness has resulted in achieving delicate high-frequency reproduction that was not possible before.

Cutting Housing of Aluminum-Magnesium Alloy

To establish AFDS, a much higher precision is required compared to general driver units. High rigidity is also necessary to prevent unwanted resonance and to strongly support the driver. Therefore, the cutting housing made of aluminum-magnesium alloy is cut with extremely high precision, and the finish is applied with a leather coating also used in high-end cameras.

Structure with Higher Front Driver Open Area

In the conventional D8000, the front magnet was a cause of fine peaks and dips. By removing this in the D8000 DC, the front open area has become approximately 70% larger, significantly improving the high-frequency reproducibility and allowing each sound to be reproduced more precisely.

Newly Developed Open-Type Earpads Using Japanese Paper

In both closed and open-type headphones, many seal the inside of the earpads, extending the reproducible range of frequencies that the driver unit cannot naturally reproduce to the low range. However, to express the naturally wide and high-quality low range that the sound source inherently possesses, the driver unit itself must have the capability to reproduce down to the low range, and it requires earpads with low sealing and breathability. However, many traditional planar magnetic and general dynamic types fail to provide sufficient low range with low-sealing earpads.

In the D8000 DC, the low-frequency reproduction range was extended by AFDS, making it possible to sufficiently reproduce the low range even with low-sealing earpads using only the driver unit's capability. The earpads, which greatly influence this sound quality, are our company's developed product using a special material of Japanese paper for the surface material, combining a smooth touch and durability, and a foam body with excellent breathability. Furthermore, in the DC, the thickness of these earpads has been increased to 1.5 times the usual, enlarging the volume of the sound space. As a result, the sound field is expanded, enhancing the smoothness of the human voice range. Similarly, the headband part also uses the same material, achieving high durability and resistance to humidity.

Precision Pursued In-House Production

The D8000 DC is produced at our headquarters in Kawasaki. The precision of product assembly is greatly influenced by the precision of the components and the precision of the tools that assist in assembly. To allow for fine adjustments during assembly with minimal component precision, we have internalized the design and manufacture of production tools.

Additionally, we independently develop production machines such as vibration plate forming machines and measurement devices like vibration plate tension meters as specialized products.

To truly create good products, it is necessary to engage in material processing ourselves. The quality of being made in Japan is that we can gain the cooperation of material makers in such cases. By controlling the entire process from the source of components to product assembly, we achieve high product quality.
