Ultra-open sound field sensation with Free Air structure

The DX6000 features a newly developed 'Free Air structure' that greatly surpasses traditional open-type headphones, achieving both an open sound field sensation and low frequencies. Development of a revolutionary dynamic driver using foamed silicon edge

The newly designed dynamic driver unit (DU) adopts a high-strength magnesium alloy with significant internal loss as the diaphragm material. This reduces the occurrence of split vibrations and unwanted resonances.

Furthermore, the edge development took several years in this driver unit development. General edge materials cannot suppress resonance occurring at certain frequency ranges. In recent years, various shapes have been proposed for edges to address this issue in speakers. We have chosen to use foamed silicon rubber for this problem. By leveraging the characteristics of the extremely lightweight foam material, we have added thickness to the edge. The use of a material that is extremely light and flexible while also having thickness resolves the conflicting issues of ease of movement and preventing unwanted resonance. The combination of this edge material and the magnesium diaphragm is achieved not by bonding with general adhesives but by molding the foamed silicon material in a state where the magnesium diaphragm is fixed inside the mold, forming it into one piece. This fundamentally resolves various issues such as individual differences caused by adhesive amounts between the diaphragm and edge.
Image Name Additionally, a major problem that hinders the accurate movement of the diaphragm is the connection of the voice coil leads to the edge. This method is commonly used in many products for its advantage in preventing wire breakage. However, since it involves applying adhesive to part of the lightweight edge, the vibration system ends up with biased movement. To allow the vibration system to perform accurate piston motion, the design avoids connecting the voice coil leads to the edge and instead arranges them in the air to prevent interference with the diaphragm's movement. To balance this method with the reliability of being resistant to wire breakage, we use an original aluminum alloy wire for the voice coil leads.

Accurate response to input signals with the Transient Coil System

・Issues with the Free Air structure
The more you open the air passages such as the back of the driver unit, inside the earpad, and inside and outside the housing, the more open and natural the sound field sensation becomes, but the reproducing frequency range in the low domain narrows. To resolve this, the driver unit's f0, the lowest resonant frequency, must be significantly lowered. However, generally, open-type headphones achieve high impedance, i.e., increasing the number of turns of the voice coil and making it heavier, and increasing the coil's L division to reduce high-frequency sound pressure. Using a flexible material in the edge to lower f0 as it is impedes accurate piston motion.

・Development of the Transient Coil System
To resolve these conflicting elements, we developed the 'Transient Coil System' which inserts the coil directly into the driver unit. This allows the vibration system (diaphragm + edge + voice coil) to remain lightweight while lowering the high-frequency sound pressure and realizing a low f0, the lowest resonant frequency, by using a flexible and easy-to-move material in the edge. By balancing these technologies, we achieve an open sound field sensation and sufficiently necessary low sound sensation, while simultaneously realizing sharp sound rise and fall (transient) with a lightweight vibration system.

※ By equipping the 'Transient Coil System', the standard impedance is 47Ω@1kHz, but at 20kHz, the impedance rises to 480Ω, so this product is not a portable device, and we recommend using a sufficiently powerful amp with high impedance compatibility.

Open-type earpads using special Washi fabric

In both closed and what are called open-type headphones, many earpads are somewhat closed to extend the reproducible frequency range down to the low domain that cannot be originally reproduced by the driver unit. However, to express the high-quality low range with the original natural breadth of the sound source, the driver unit itself must have the capacity to reproduce down to the low range, and in addition, it requires earpads with low closure and breathability. However, many general dynamic types lack low range with earpads of low closure.

This product achieves an extremely low lowest resonant frequency (f0), making it possible to sufficiently reproduce low ranges even with earpads of low closure due to the driver unit's capacity alone. The earpads that greatly influence this sound quality are our in-house developed products, using special Washi fabric with a dry texture and durability as the surface material and a foamed body with excellent breathability. Additionally, the headband part also uses the same material, realizing high durability and resistance to humidity.
