With the newly developed "AFDS: Air Film Damping System", we have achieved a sound quality that combines the delicate highs of planar magnetic types with the openness and volume of dynamic types in the low range. This product allows you to rediscover new aspects of familiar music and makes you want to listen to your favorite music again and again, reaffirming the joy of audio.

Coexistence of Delicate Highs of Planar Magnetic Types and Open, Voluminous Lows of Dynamic Types

"Open and Voluminous Lows"
Traditional planar magnetic types required increasing the driver unit's reproducible low-frequency range because the diaphragm would touch the magnet at large amplitudes in the low range. To compensate for insufficient lows, the inside of the ear pad is sealed, and the front of the diaphragm is enclosed in a closed space. This is the same principle that allows earphones to reproduce low frequencies regardless of their small size by sealing the inside of the ear pad. By sealing the inside of the ear pad, low frequencies can be reproduced down to low frequency ranges, resulting in low frequencies reproduced in a closed space like earphones. With the D8000, the "AFDS: Air Film Damping System" resolves the issue of the diaphragm touching the magnet, allowing the driver unit to lower the reproducible low-frequency range. Combined with breathable ear pads, it has become possible to reproduce lows with a sense of volume and openness that could only be expressed by superior dynamic types.

"Delicate Highs"
To reproduce delicate highs, the diaphragm's lightness is prioritized above all. Compared to dynamic types of the same diameter, the D8000's vibration system mass is about 1/3 lighter. The ultra-lightweight film diaphragm is etched with an extremely thin aluminum coil, eliminating the need for adhesives between the coil and diaphragm, which are necessary in dynamic types but negatively affect sound quality. Adhesives with a significant impact on sound quality are a crucial part known as a source of noise. The D8000 fundamentally resolves this issue, achieving the reproduction of delicate highs.

"Coexistence of Delicate Highs of Planar Magnetic Types and Open, Voluminous Lows of Dynamic Types"
By combining the delicate highs of planar magnetic types and the open, voluminous lows of dynamic types, using the D8000 allows you to rediscover new aspects of familiar music and makes you want to listen to your favorite music again and again. The high sound quality provides a real sense of touching the deeper parts of music.

Newly Developed "AFDS: Air Film Damping System"

In traditional planar magnetic driver units, there was an issue where the diaphragm would touch the magnet at large amplitudes in the low range. To resolve this, we established a new diaphragm control technology called "AFDS: Air Film Damping System" through repeated simulations of the diaphragm using the finite element method and measurements with a laser Doppler vibrometer. This resolved the issue of low-frequency reproducibility being low, a weak point of planar magnetic types. It is a technology that can be said to be a reinvention of planar magnetic types. With the D8000, the AFDS resolves the issue of the diaphragm touching the magnet, allowing the driver unit to lower the reproducible low-frequency range. Combined with breathable ear pads, it has become possible to reproduce lows with a sense of volume and openness that could only be expressed by superior dynamic types.

Design for Long-Term Use and Easy Repair

To ensure you can use the product indefinitely after purchase, we have designed it so that almost all parts can be disassembled with a screwdriver. This allows for repairs and future upgrades.

Aluminum, Magnesium Alloy Milled Housing

To establish AFDS, extremely high precision is required compared to general driver units. Therefore, the aluminum-magnesium alloy milled housing is cut with high precision. The black finish is done with a leather coating also used in high-end cameras. The silver is hard anodized.

Precision Pursuit in In-House Production

The D8000 is produced at our headquarters in Kawasaki. The precision of product assembly is greatly influenced by the precision of the parts and the precision of the tools used to assist assembly. We internalize the design and manufacture of production tools so that we can make micro-adjustments during assembly for the slightest deviations in part precision. Additionally, for the D8000, we have developed dedicated products such as production machines for diaphragm molding and measuring instruments like diaphragm tension meters. To truly create good products, it is necessary to delve into the manufacturing processes of parts close to the raw materials. The goodness of Made in Japan is in obtaining the cooperation of makers close to the raw materials in such cases. By controlling everything from the raw material sources of parts to product assembly, we realize high product quality.

Newly Developed Open-Type Ear Pads

In addition to closed types, open-type headphones, which are often referred to as open-back, extend the reproduction frequency range to low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by the driver unit alone by closing the inside of the ear pads. However, to express the original natural wide sound quality of the audio source, it is necessary for the driver unit itself to reproduce low frequencies and use ear pads with low closure and breathability. However, most conventional planar magnetic and typical dynamic types lack low frequencies in low-closure ear pads. With the D8000, thanks to AFDS, the range of low-frequency reproduction has been extended, allowing sufficient low-frequency reproduction with low-closure ear pads alone. The ear pads that greatly influence this sound quality are newly developed for the D8000, made from breathable foam and special fibers.

Difference in Sound Quality Between D8000 and D8000 Pro Edition

The "D8000 Pro Edition" is a new product that maintains the delicate sound quality of the "D8000" while meeting the demands from recording professionals who want to listen at larger volumes than typical consumers. With "AFDS: Air Film Damping System" retuned for professional recording use, the new tuning considers human auditory characteristics, where larger listening volumes make low frequencies more audible. As a result, the D8000 Pro Edition offers a more detailed sound quality when listening to narrow dynamic range "POPS" and "ROCK", compared to the D8000, which excelled in listening to wide dynamic range "classical music".

The differences in sound quality orientation between the D8000 and D8000 Pro Edition are expressed in the following way. ↓ English-Chinese-Japanese 2 types *This graph does not show the sound quality orientation of the headphones themselves, but classifies the orientation of music recordings using two characteristics (horizontal and vertical axes) to visually indicate which headphones are compatible with that orientation. The horizontal axis represents the characteristics of the distance sensation of recorded voices and instrumental sounds. Large distance sensation is expressed as "large sound field sensation", while small distance sensation is expressed as "large resolution sensation". The vertical axis represents the characteristics of the dynamic range of the recording. The dynamic range is the range of temporal changes in sound volume.
