Responding to a request from recording professionals who want to listen to delicate sound quality at higher volumes than typical consumers, we have tuned the 'AFDS: Air Film Damping System' for professional use. As the listening volume increases, we also consider the human auditory characteristic that makes low frequencies easier to hear. In contrast to the D8000, which excelled in listening to wide 'classic music' with dynamic range, the D8000 Pro Edition offers a higher resolution sound quality when listening to narrow dynamic range 'POPS' or 'rock'.


Coexistence of delicate high-frequency planar magnetic type and dynamic type low-frequency with a sense of volume and openness

"Low-frequency with a sense of openness and volume"
In traditional planar magnetic types, the diaphragm would contact the magnet in low frequencies where the amplitude becomes large, requiring the driver unit to raise the reproducible low-frequency range. To compensate for insufficient low frequencies as they are, the inside of the earpad is sealed, creating a closed space in front of the diaphragm. This is based on the same principle as earphones that seal the inside to reproduce low frequencies regardless of their small size. By sealing the inside of the earpad, it becomes possible to reproduce low frequencies down to a low frequency range, similar to low frequencies reproduced in a closed space like earphones. With the D8000, by solving the problem of the diaphragm contacting the magnet with the 'AFDS: Air Film Damping System', it became possible to lower the reproducible low-frequency range of the driver unit. Combined with breathable earpads, it made it possible to reproduce low frequencies with a sense of volume and openness, which could only be expressed by superior dynamic types.

"Delicate high-frequency"
To reproduce delicate high frequencies, the diaphragm's light weight is prioritized above all. The D8000 Pro Edition has a diaphragm system mass that is about 1/3 lighter compared to dynamic types of the same diameter. Due to the structure where an extremely thin aluminum coil is etched onto a super lightweight film diaphragm, there is no need for adhesives that would negatively impact sound quality to attach the coil to the diaphragm, which is indispensable in dynamic types. The D8000 Pro Edition fundamentally solves the problems caused by adhesives and realizes the reproduction of delicate high frequencies.

Newly developed 'AFDS: Air Film Damping System'

In traditional planar magnetic driver units, there was a problem where the diaphragm would contact the magnet in low frequencies where the amplitude becomes large. To solve this, we have established a new diaphragm control technology called the 'AFDS: Air Film Damping System' through repeated simulations of the diaphragm using finite element methods and measurements using laser Doppler vibrometers. This solved the problem point of low reproducibility of low frequencies, which was a weakness of planar magnetic types. It is a technology that can be called the reinvention of the planar magnetic type. With the D8000, by solving the problem of the diaphragm contacting the magnet with AFDS, it became possible to lower the reproducible low-frequency range of the driver unit. Combined with breathable earpads, it made it possible to reproduce low frequencies with a sense of volume and openness, which could only be expressed by superior dynamic types.


Design considering long-term use and ease of repair


To ensure you can use it forever after purchase, almost all parts are designed to be disassembled with screws. Repairs and future upgrades are made possible.


Aluminum, magnesium alloy cut housing

To establish AFDS, extremely high precision is required compared to general driver units. Therefore, the aluminum-magnesium alloy cut housing is precision cut. The black finish is a laser coating finish also used in high-end cameras. The silver is processed with hard alumite.


Precision-pursuing in-house production

The D8000 is produced at our headquarters in Kawasaki. The precision of product assembly is greatly influenced by both the precision of the parts and the precision of the tools that assist assembly. To allow for micro-adjustments while assembling, we internalize the design and manufacturing of production tools. Additionally, for the D8000, we have developed dedicated equipment such as diaphragm forming machines and diaphragm tension meters. To create truly good products, it is necessary to step into the manufacturing process of parts close to raw materials. The excellence of made in Japan is achieved when such cooperation with manufacturers close to raw materials is obtained. Newly developed open-type ear pads

In addition to closed types, even headphones called open types often extend the reproduction frequency of lower ranges, which cannot be naturally reproduced by the driver unit alone, by sealing the ear pad interior. However, to achieve a high-quality expression of the wide natural sound that the sound source originally has, the driver unit itself must be capable of reproducing lower ranges, and there is a need to use ear pads with low sealing and breathability. However, many conventional planar magnetic types and general dynamic types often lack lower ranges with low-sealing ear pads. In the D8000, the reproduction range of lower ranges was able to be extended with AFDS, making it possible to sufficiently reproduce lower ranges even with low-sealing ear pads using only the driver unit's capabilities. The ear pads that greatly influence this sound quality are newly developed products for the D8000, consisting of a foam body with excellent breathability and a special fiber structure.

Difference in Sound Quality between D8000 and D8000 Pro Edition

The "D8000 Pro Edition" is a new product that received requests from recording professionals who wanted to listen to the detailed sound quality of the "D8000" at a larger volume than usual consumer levels, and it has been re-tuned in accordance with the usage conditions of recording professionals in the "AFDS: Air Film Damping System". As the listening volume increases, the new tuning also considers the human auditory characteristic that makes low ranges more audible, resulting in a sound quality that feels more detailed when listening to narrow "POPS" or "Rock" in contrast to the D8000, which excelled in listening to broad "Classical Music" with a wide dynamic range.
